One Tuesday night in 1998 I was sitting by myself in my living room ready to grab the phone to dial 911.  My lungs seemed to be filled with anything BUT air and I had to force myself to catch a breath.  I've had asthma before and this certainly wasn't the same experience.  I was beginning to go into a total panic, but after a few minutes I was feeling better and I just brushed it off as a learning experience.

Fast forward to 2005; I'd had 3 doctors' visits and 9 biopsies due to excessive sun exposure from the same job.  Is all the money in the world worth risking your life like this?  Not for me.  I had to find a different way to make a living.  This time I would create a business that I really loved and that I can continue to do until I'm 90 years old.  Not one that I'm in for the sake of a good income, although I was determined to have both. 

 

After some research and quite a bit of "soul searching" I decided to begin coaching and mentoring small business owners.  After all, I certainly had a great track record running a successful business. 

 

I took all of the "right" steps.  I went to a top-notch coaching school, I created a laser focused niche, and I went to all of the best seminars and enrolled in a pricey marketing program. 

 

There was just one catch:

 

I didn't know what to CHARGE in my new business!

 

"Copy what others in your market are charging."  If I heard that once, I must have heard it 100 times. 

 

This just didn't make any sense.  There wasn't anybody doing exactly what I was doing.  How could I copy anyone else?  Not to mention, how did I know if I was copying someone who was successful or someone who was about to shut their doors? 

 

On one hand I was being told to create a unique place in the market and on the other I was being told to copy my "competition." 

 

Once again I couldn't seem to catch my breath.

 

So I decided to get creative.  I tapped into my past experience in the auto industry to see what I could apply.  It's pretty amazing how many great answers you get when you look outside your industry.  It forces you to remove all boundaries.  This is the epitome of thinking outside the box. 

 

I also decided to interview KNOWN experts; service professionals from various fields and backgrounds.  I interviewed 12 incredibly successful business owners who, on average, were charging over $750 per hour and getting it.  These were the people that I wanted to "copy."   

 

Before I knew it I was selling coaching packages well into 4-figures...more than double what my coaching trainer was charging.
